My Autumn capsule wardrobe has pretty much stayed the same for years. I keep my clothes very basic and neutral so nothing really goes out of style. Well, actually I guess skinny jeans are out now, so that’s not entirely true. 😉 Read on for my guide to creating an Autumn capsule wardrobe to simplify your closet and create a wardrobe that works for you.

How to create a capsule wardrobe
- Find inspo
Go on Pinterest and type in what you want your Autumn wardrobe style to look like. Make a board titled “Autumn Capsule Wardrobe” and start pinning your favorite outfits to that board. Make a list of common items you pinned and use that to create your wardrobe.
- Use what you already have
Rather than going out and buying a bunch of new clothes (which defeats the purpose of a capsule wardrobe) see how you can style what you currently have differently using the inspo from the Pinterest board you just created.
- Donate what you don’t wear, doesn’t fit, or don’t like
We all have clothes that we keep because we either spent a lot of money on them, they’ll fit one day, or sentimental reasons. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need that kind of baggage! Donate the things you cannot or will not wear within the next year. I promise – someone out there will love it way more!
- Be consistent with colors
The idea of a capsule wardrobe is that you can mix and match items for different outfits. In order to do this, you’ll want to stick to a similar color palette.
- Go through your summer/spring clothes
Don’t neglect your Summer and Spring clothes when creating your Autumn capsule wardrobe! Maybe a summer dress can be made into an Autumn dress by just throwing a cardigan or sweater over it.
- Quality over quantity
Buy quality items that will last many years versus fast fashion items that’ll last one season. Other than 1 or 2 fun seasonal pieces keep everything pretty neutral and good quality.

The way you create your capsule wardrobes will depend on what works for you and how many “true” seasons you experience where you live. If your seasons drastically vary from one another, it would be wise to have separate capsule wardrobes for each season. However, most of the pieces in those seasonal wardrobes can overlap. It’s recommended to have about 25-50 pieces in each season’s capsule wardrobe.
