How to clean enameled cookware

My enameled dutch oven is one of my kitchen essentials. I use it to brown, braise, sauté, boil, steam, bake bread, and decor for my kitchen – you name it and my dutch oven does it! Sometimes with all of this use, it gets pretty nasty – and sometimes just downright burnt.

Step one – prevention

I keep my dutch oven on my stove because I love the look of functional decor. It’s simple, white, and ready to use. However, this means that when I cook on my stove, oil and food splatter on the outside of the dutch oven.

I’ll usually try to prevent this by moving the dutch oven off the stovetop while I’m cooking. The second way I’ll prevent burnt on food is by washing the dutch oven prior to baking it in the oven.

These prevention methods don’t always go as planned though which is why I often have to resort to step two.

Step two – glass cooktop cleaner

I use the Weiman glass cooktop cleaner to clean my dutch oven!

There’s something about the formula of the Weiman Glass cooktop cleaner that removes any burnt food or oil on my enameled cookware within seconds! Sometimes, if stuff is really caked on there, I’ll have to use some elbow grease – but even that’s rare!

Where I Buy Weiman Glass Cooktop Cleaner

I ALWAYS find this stuff on sale for exactly $2.00 at either Grocery Outlet, TJ Maxx, or Marshalls. If you’re in a pinch and want it right away you can buy it on Amazon for under $10. Still not bad for such a handy product!

Other uses for Weiman Glass Cooktop Cleaner

You can use this cleaner for way more than just a glass cooktop and your enameled cookware! I use mine to clean my stainless steel sink too. It makes my sink look so shiny and clean within seconds.

Step 3 – Daily cleaning of enameled cookware

For everyday cleaning, I just use basic castile soap and a scrub brush.

Other methods for cleaning enameled cookware

Prior to discovering my little trick – I tried all the other methods out there with no luck. Nothing got my dutch oven perfectly clean like the Weiman cleaner. Here are some of the other popular methods.

boil with baking soda

Boiling with baking soda doesn’t solve the problem of the outside of the dutch oven being burnt (from baking in a very hot oven). But it does work well for cleaning the inside. Even still, though, this method doesn’t get the grime off the top of the dutch oven, lid, handles, etc.

Use a magic eraser

One method for cleaning enameled cookware is to use a magic eraser. Not a bad trick, but still doesn’t work as well as my old friend Weiman.

Diluted bleach

I don’t love the idea of using bleach on my cookware so I opted out of trying this method. If you want to try this method though, use 1 part bleach to 3 parts water to clean your enameled cookware.

I’ve had an enameled cast iron Dutch oven on my wish list for a couple of years now. What brand do you recommend?

I highly recommend the Martha Stewart brand that I have. It’s only about $75 and works like a charm. Much more affordable than others on the market.

Great tip! Starla, Sierra and I love cast iron enamel pans! We have written about them a couple of times on our blog. This will be really helpful to keep them looking pretty! Love it! Great job!

I love a beautiful white enameled Dutch Oven – so classic and nice to look at! I can imagine that keeping it looking nice and clean is a bit of a challenge. I love using the Weiman cleaner on our cooktop, to that’s a great idea to use it on the outside of the pot. It’s handy to find multiple uses for the products we already have on hand, rather than buying another product.

I love enabled cast-iron pans. Mine is dark blue on the outside with a cream colour on the inside. I will definitely need to try this on the inside to see if I can remove the few stains that have been collected over the years.
